Q. what are smokers' scars?
A. Smoking and healing – Smoking affects the body’s ability to heal. This is because smoking affects the blood supply to the skin – nicotine constricts the blood vessels and the carbon monoxide in tobacco interferes with the delivery of oxygen to the tissues. Smokers produce less protein rich fibre, required for an operation scar to knit and heal successfully. This can cause wounds to re-open. It is particularly dangerous if smokers need the bowel to be stitched – smokers’ wounds are more likely to turn septic. Smokers’ scars are up to twice the width of those of non-smokers on healing.
