smoke free tobacco
This category includes both snuff and chewing tobacco. These are not widely used in the UK, with the exception of some ethnic communities. They are more commonly used in southern Europe and abroad.

Dried snuff is inhaled through the nose, whilst moist snuff is placed between the lip and the gum.

Smoke-free tobacco products have no tar, but do have a very high nicotine content – more than 10x the amount in a cigarette. It is wrong to think that these are less dangerous than cigarettes. There is not the same lung damage caused by smoke, but the risk of cancer of the mouth and throat, as well as gum disease and damage to teeth, is increased. The high nicotine content means that a smoke-free habit is particularly difficult to quit.

Smoke-free products emit nicotine over a long period of time. This means that the brain may contain nicotine 24 hours a day.
