Smoking kills 120,000 people a year in the UK – most die prematurely, losing about 8 years of life.
In
theory the type of paper used in a cigarette can
reduce the amount of nicotine and tar taken in by
a smoker. A more porous paper will let more air
into the cigarette, diluting the smoke.
Filters are made of cellulose acetate and trap some
of the tar and smoke particles from the inhaled
smoke. Filters also cool the smoke slightly, making
it easier to inhale.
