| Obviously, there are drugs which, in fact, help our health and fitness. At certain times we all call in at the chemist to buy something to ease a sore throat or a headache, or deal with any manner of minor complaints. At other times we need to see a doctor, with a more serious problem, and are often prescribed drugs which are specifically given to restore us to our full health and fitness. In fact, many of us have our first medicine while we are still very young babies, suffering from teething or sleeping problems. The Dangers: Problems still arise however, when these substances are not used as they are intended, or are used by people for whom they were never prescribed. They must always be taken as the instructions outline. Often there are restrictions on how much should be taken within a certain time limit, and differing amounts for different age groups. Often people are excluded if suffering from a certain chronic condition, or if they are taking other medication. Special mention must be made here of paracetamol. This is an everyday tablet used by vast numbers of people as a simple painkiller. Taking more than the specified dosage, however, can be very serious. Permanent damage can be done to the liver and kidneys. It can even be fatal. Treat this drug with respect. As regards prescribed medicines, it is the doctor, with his knowledge of our medical history, who selects an appropriate drug for our ailment. Problems will occur if prescriptions are swapped among patients. Never take a prescription meant for someone else. |
