Poppers is the term for the group of chemicals known as Alkyl Nitrites. These include Amyl Nitrite, Butyl Nitrite and Isobutyl Nitrite. Amyl nitrite is a prescription only medicine. Possession is not illegal but supply can be an offence. They are legally sold as ´air fresheners´ or ´room deodorisers´, but it is an offence to sell them for the purpose of being inhaled. This is a loophole in the law, and is due to be amended.

- Regular use can lead to skin outbreaks around the nose and mouth.
- Swallowing poppers can lead to unconsciousness and death.
- If spilled, they can burn the skin.
- Very dangerous for people with glaucoma, anaemia or respiratory problems.
