The full name for heroin is diamorphine hydrochloride. It is a drug which comes from the opium poppy.

What it looks like. It is usually a brown or white powder, sold in ´wraps´ or bags.

Apparent Positive Effects:
  • Users tend to feel warm and contented, cushioned from the reality of any problem, fear or anxiety.
  • Larger doses can make them drowsy and relaxed.

The Downside:
  • Initial use can result in nausea and vomiting.
  • Regular users can experience chronic constipation, menstrual problems, and respiratory difficulties
  • High doses can lead to unconsciousness, coma or even death.
  • Heroin is extremely addictive. Users become both physically and emotionally dependent on the drug. It becomes a long term problem with life changing effects.
  • Tolerance develops so more is needed to get the same effects. Then users need the drug just to feel normal, and to prevent withdrawal symptoms.
  • Withdrawal symptoms are very unpleasant, and may include muscular aches and spasms, chills and insomnia.
  • Overdose is always a risk because of the variable and unpredictable purity of the drug.
  • Opiates depress the nervous system. Therefore it is dangerous to mix heroin with depressants such as alcohol and tranquillisers.
  • Some people inject heroin which is the most dangerous way of taking any drug. This leads to its own dangers.
